Australian Pollinator Week Announcement

Wheen Bee Foundation is delighted to announce its support for Australian Pollinator Week, held annually in the second full week of November.

“Australian Pollinator Week is a fantastic initiative,” said Fiona Chambers, CEO of The Wheen Bee Foundation. “It is an opportunity to celebrate all pollinators and their vital contributions, both to food security and ecological sustainability.”

Australian Pollinator Week is a grass roots initiative that was first celebrated in 2015. It has been incredibly successful at bringing communities together to learn about pollinators.  Through running events and developing and circulating numerous educational resources, Australian Pollinator Week has, in a relatively short amount of time, developed a dedicated community of followers.

Pollinators affect 35 percent of global agricultural land, supporting the production of 87 of the leading food crops worldwide (FAO, 2018). Additionally, nearly 90% of wild flowering plants also depend on animal pollination, with a high diversity of wild pollinators being crucial to their pollination even when managed bees are present in high numbers (IPES, 2016).

Australian Pollinator Week is a wonderful vehicle for encouraging harmonious growth in the numbers and diversity of all pollinators, managed and wild.

Wheen Bee Foundation is funding the development of a new online platform for Australian Pollinator Week.  The platform will go live in September in time to promote 2019 Australian Pollinator Week events. Events can be registered for free from September at https://www.australianpollinatorweek.org.au.  Expressions of interest can be registered at this address from today.
