Honey business recycles to support bees

Honey business and cafe owner Kim Phillips knows exactly how important bees are for her business, The House of Honey in Western Australia’s Swan Valley.

The honey production business and cafe is powered by 50 million bees which contribute to the production of honey, mead, candles and beauty products.

When it came time to choosing a partner to support her business donating to the Wheen Bee Foundation through the Containers for Change recycling scheme was an obvious step.

“I am thrilled to be able to support the Wheen Bee Foundation through the recycling scheme,” Kim says.

“When you hold bees so dear to your heart, it seems only natural to invest money back into securing their future.”

The Containers for Change recycling scheme encourages consumers to return eligible cans, bottles and cartons for recycling to receive a refund of 10 cents. Participants can choose to keep their refund or donate it to a registered charity or community group.

Kim Phillips is the Managing Director and founder of The House of Honey a family-owned cafe and shop and is a passionate force behind the recycling initiative.

The idea to use the recycling scheme came after Kim noticed bottles and plastics from her Swan Valley café were ending up in general waste.

“We had been looking into recycling options for a while when we heard about earning refunds through the state recycling scheme,” Kim says.

“Instead of reinvesting the funds into the business, I thought it would be beneficial to donate the money to a charity dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of bees.”

Alongside its cafe, The House of Honey is home to 500 hives, 50 million bees, a Meadery and shop while also offering educational experiences, tourism adventures, workshops and events.

“For businesses like ours, bees are essential, we could not operate without them,” Kim says.

The Wheen Bee Foundation is a leading Australian not-for-profit charity that promotes awareness of the importance of bees for food security and raises funds for research that addresses the national and global threats to bees.

Container recycling deposit schemes will be available in every state and territory with Recycle Rewards launching in Tasmania in May.

“I think recycling is a great sustainable option and I would encourage all business owners to use their state recycling scheme to donate to a worthy cause such as the Wheen Bee Foundation,” Kim says.
