Bees aren’t the only pollinators hard at work in Australia. Drone flies also play an important role in pollinating crops and native flora.
With large spotted eyes and a golden body, the golden drone fly may be mistaken for a honey bee or wasp. But look closely … unlike bees and wasps, which have two pairs of wings, drone flies have just one.
Golden drone flies lay their eggs in ponds filled with decaying plant matter. Populations can be supported by creating small, brackish ponds that provide these pollinators with a safe place to complete their life cycle.
So this June, let’s give a little love to the often-overlooked drone fly, a small but mighty contributor to healthy ecosystems and secure pollination.
