There are 11 species of stingless bee in the genera Tetragonula and Austroplebeia.
As their name suggests, these bees don’t have a functioning stinger, making them harmless to humans and truly sweet as can bee.
Tetragonula species thrive in Australia’s warmer, wetter regions, while Austroplebeia prefer drier environments.
Stingless bees are the only Australian native bees to be domesticated. This means that large numbers of bees in managed hives can be introduced into orchards as crops come into bloom to provide essential pollination services.
Stingless bees are the only Australian native bees that produce honey – although only in small quantities. In a good year, a hive can produce up to 1kg of tangy, medicinal honey. Making every drop count.
